It's the late 1800s and women prisoners are shipped off to infamous Devil's Island where they
are forced to slave away for their cruel masters. The men whom oversee the operation are in a

entirely new set of problems for the women. Letterboxed print.

THE ADVENTURES OF GERARD (1970)- Peter McEnery stars as Col. Etienne Girard, Hussar officer of the Napoleonic era. The story takes place during the Little Corporal's 1808 campaign in the Spanish peninsula. Col. Gerard's adventures include an ongoing war of nerves against Napoleon's forces, not to mention a steamy affair with one Countess Teresa (Claudia Cardinale). "Nappy" himself is played by Eli Wallach, who certainly has the right temperament for the role, even though he's much too tall to be thoroughly convincing. Filmed in Spain, The Adventures of Gerard is based on characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A very lively adventure comedy. Directed by Jerzy (DEEP END) Skolimoski!

THE THREE SERGEANTS OF BENGAL (1964)-Wow, a perfect widescreen version of this Umberto lenzi action film starring Richard Harrison, Wandessa Guida, and Andrea Bosic. They have several adventures (or, shall we say, misadventures) along the way.

Zorro VS Maciste (1963)-in Italian with English subs, beautiful widescreen print. The gimmick in this movie of course makes zero sense.  Zorro is a crime fighting super hero who hassles corrupt fat government officials usually named something along the lines of Don Diego way back in the pre-United States California of the 16the Century. He's a sly devil who delights in carving the letter "Z" all over the countryside, including the occasional ass of some unsuspecting evil doer. He is also a snazzy dresser, favoring an all black ensemble including hat, mask, and cape. Maciste (or Samson as he is sometimes known) hails from an earlier era.  An era when men weren't measured by their prissy fencing skills, but by ancient standards known as gluts, delts, quads, and lats! If you couldn't dead lift seven thousand tons, chuck temple pillars two miles, and snap the neck of a cyclops, you may just as well get back in the kitchen with the rest of the women. And because of the need to be perpetually greased up and glistening so as to maintain that "just built up a sweat by beating up a hoard of barbarians with chunks of mountain" look, no more clothing than a ratty jock strap was required! Clearly, these two men are from different worlds with different sensibilities that could never co-mingle. Umberto Lenzi directs Alan Steel, Pierre Brice and Moira Orfei.

Carthage in Flames (1960)-Beautiful widescreen print. Carthage in Flames is precisely that, a sprawling, bloody, English-dubbed pageant about the African city's war with ancient Rome. Terence Hill, Anne Heywood, José Suarez, Pierre Brasseur, Daniel Gelin and several thousand extras battle it out. The color is as red-hot as the title. The import has two mild surprises. Carmine Gallone, the director, has staged a dandy, completely authentic-looking sea battle in the first reel (we'll take this one to those 'Ben-Hur' miniature galleys). Also, the picture employs enough sub-plots, peppered with historical footnotes, to make a viewer's head spin

QUEEN FOR CAESAR (1962)-Letterboxed print. Pascale Petit stars as Cleopatra in this almost-historical melodrama about the Egyptian queen's amorous adventures and rise to power involving all manner of alliances and betrayals with, among others, her sulky, ineffectual brother Ptolemaeos (Corrado Pani), military bigwig Pompeius (Akim Tamiroff), her loyal but simple-minded boyfriend Achillas (George Ardisson), and, of course, Julius Caesar, played here by Gordon Scott.

BRENNUS ENEMY OF ROME (1963)-Beautiful widescreen print. Brennus [played by Gordon Mitchell] and his followers make war with the Romans and aim to destroy the city of Rome.  Quinto Fabio [Tony kendal] is trying to stop the terror of the barbarians and at the same time rescue his beloved Nissia, who's been held prisoner by Brennus and is being forced into marriage by him. This film is definatly one of the best sword and sandals you can find.  Gordon Mitchell steals the show here, and is just amazingly awesome as Brennus the Gaul.  He plays the part with such ferocious strength and energy that it raises this film a few levels above the usual sword and sandal.  I cannot stress enough how awesome Mitchell is in this film.  This is must see for all peplum and non-peplum fans alike.  Fine acting, good script, engaging plot, well directed, plenty of action, adventure, and a dash of romance.   This is one loud and thunderous romp, a very well made film.  Strongly recommended!!!

REVENGE OF THE BARBARIANS (1960)-Letterboxed print. Anthony Steel, Daniela Rocca, and Robert Alda star. The Visigoths invade Italy during the later years of the Roman Empire.  When the emperor's sister tricks the barbarians into a wholesale massacre of their men, their leader vows revenge. For its time - 1960 - REVENGE OF THE BARBARIANS is surprisingly erotic. Voluptuous Daniella Rocca oozes sex, and it also contains two rather kinky scenes of females being whipped, the second even leading to a bit of s/m love-making. I found the whipping scenes mildly interesting, just from the standpoint of how raw they seemed and how believable the cries of pain were.

MACISTE IN KING SOLOMON’S MINES (1964)Letterboxed print. Toplined by Reg Park (whose claim to fame is that he's brawnier than most of the other so-called "musclemen" who played Hercules, Goliath, Maciste, etc. - it certainly isn't his acting, which is atrocious and seemingly dubbed by himself or some equally erudite ex-high school football hero), it's the story of a mythic hero of the people, summoned to the jungle city of Zimba to free the oppressed masses, who have been enslaved by the evil Queen Fazira to dig gold (and more gold) from the legendary mines of King Solomon. Once Maciste arrives in the city, he is overpowered by Fazira's personal guard and bewitched with a magical ankle bracelet, which causes him to lose his free will, relegating him to servitude in the mines. Soon (but not soon enough), he is freed from his mind-numbing paralysis and exacts his revenge upon Fazira & her minions & co-conspirators, frees the slaves and installs his friend as the new ruler in an energetic finale. QUEEN MARGOT (1954)-In French with English subs. This is a good movie, and although comparisons with its 1994 successor are inevitable, it wears well on its own and better in some ways. This is old-fashioned French film making, not noticeably different from Hollywood historical epics of the same era w/ the exception of a flash of nudity here and there. It is important to remember that at the time of this film, only Gance (screenplay) was an international legend. Jeanne Moreau is fine as Marguerite de Valois & Françoise Rosay as Catherine de Medicis does a good job of chewing up the scenery. The '54 style potrayal of Henri d'Anjou as a very effeminate homosexual has been proven to be historically inaccurate, but Daniel Ceccaldi is amusing in the part. The acting for Charles IX, De la Mole, Coconnas et al is up to '54 par, acceptable and not terribly detracting from the story

HEROD THE GREAT (1959)-In Italian with eng subs, letterboxed print. Viktor Tourjansky's long-forgotten Italian historical epic Herod the Great dramatizes the dark final years of the title figure, an evil Judean Tetrarch notorious for sending Christ to the cross in league with Pontius Pilate. The story begins with Herod (Edmund Purdom) and Antony's shared defeat by Rome (when the two men foolishly decide to form an allegiance and go head to head with the colossal Empire), and ends with Herod's slide into insanity following Christ's death. Throughout, the ruler exhibits utter lunacy, raving constantly and spewing forth torrents of unbridled anger; viewing this film in it's original totalscope quality is truly captivating, enchanting and relentlessly dramatic throughout.

And while no one can deny that trading Little John for a eye-patch wearing pirate called One Eye who actually has two good eyes is a monster upgrade, the movie would have been merely been solidly entertaining if it had stuck solely to its "pirates standing in for the Merry Men" angle.  But it in a stroke of either genius or complete tastelessness, this Italian version of Robin Hood (with German film legend and former Tarzan Lex Barker) adds a bit of sauce to the mix by giving us Sweet Pea, a sassy full-figured black woman, prone to singing spirituals and alternately beating on One Eye and declaring her love for him!

TREASURE OF THE PETRIFIED FOREST (1964)-Letterboxed print. Salvi throws in some of his trademark touches, such as dwarf baiting and some wilfully histrionic acting.  Although it’s all supposedly set in the forest, a large proportion was shot in Cinecitta, and again the direction makes good use of the interiors, creating a heightened sense of unreality through unusual art direction and set design.  Some sequences, with sparse trees shrouded in dry ice, actually have a surprisingly gothic touch, not too different to the type of thing that Mario Bava was shooting at the time.  Unfortunately, though, despite his best efforts, Salvi was dealing with a genre that was already a considerable way past its sell by date and, although it’s better than Sinbad and the Seven Saracens, Salvi’s poorest film, it’s nowhere near as diverting as Vulcan Son of Jupiter or The Seven Tasks of Ali Baba.Gordon Mitchell, in his third film under Salvi’s direction, is good fun as the utterly despicable villain, but possibly the most nuanced performance comes from Luisa Rivelli, who had made her name in a series of b-movies and melodramas throughout the 1950s.  Ivo Payer was a Yugoslavian actor who appeared in a handful of peplums (he was formerly in the Salvi production David and Goliath).  He’s not bad, but his thespian talents skills don’t come near distracting attention from the quite appalling bouffant hairstyle he’s been landed with.

ZORRO VS THE 3 MUSKETEERS (1963)-Letterboxed print. Wow, yet another fantastic upgrade from shitty black and white to beautiful color! Director: Luigi Capuano, Cast:Gordon Scott ... Zorro, José Greci ... Isabella, Giacomo Rossi-Stuart ... Athos, Livio Lorenzon ... Porthos. Zorro and three of his bandits crouch in hidden positions in the forest as they lie in wait for unsuspecting nobility to pass by. The warm sun is pleasant and mild, and soon Zorro's men begin to nod off. Zorro, however, remains alert and angrily wakens his men when he sees a horse-drawn carriage rumble down the path. Zorro aims with his Brown Bess and fires at the carriage driver, killing him. The carriage comes to a stop and out rush four men with muskets and swords in their scabbards: D'Artagnan, Porthos, Aramis, and Athos. Zorro steps out into the road with his bandits and begins to announce himself with a swish of his cape when Athos raises his wheel-lock and shoots one of the bandits in the neck, causing red blood to leap into the air and the robber to crumple instantly to the ground. Zorro and his men fire back but the Musketeers wear armor and the bullets bounce off of their breastplates. D'Artagnan shoots another bandit in the stomach and the man drops his musket, grabs his stomach, and lays moaning on the ground. The other bandit takes off running and Zorro disappears into the bushes. D'Artagnan takes out his rapier and quickly slices the wounded bandit's throat before the group pushes after the retreating bandit.

GIANT OF METROPOLIS (1961)-Rare English language letterboxed print.  Muscleman Ohro (Gordon Mitchell) travels to the sinful capital of Atlantis to rebuke its godlessness and hubris and becomes involved in the battle against its evil lord Yoh-tar and his hideous super-science schemes. The film is an intriguing mix of peplum and sci-fi: I purposefully watched it and the similar (and contemporaneous) L'ATLANTIDE on consecutive days but, in the long run, this is the one to blend the two more successfully (or, if you like, outrageously) by way of imaginative (if clearly cheap i.e. mostly model and matte shots!) and atmospherically-lit sets a' la the work of Mario Bava, weird (and curiously baggy) costumes, and even odd-shaped (to say nothing of unwieldy) weaponry; incidentally, in the opening text scroll, we are told that Metropolis is just another name for Atlantis!

PONTIUS PILATE (1962)-Letterboxed print. Uncut version with extra scenes subtitled in English. I finally scored an English language copy of this interesting Italian sword-and-sandal style depiction of the life and times of Jesus, focusing on the career of Pontius Pilate, played by legendary French actor Jean Marais (Cocteau's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST). I previously had a Spanish language version, but the dubbing sounded like it was recorded in a radio station last week and there were virtually no sound effects. This original English version is MUCH more enjoyable, with both Basil Rathbone and John Drew Barrymore (as Judas, not as Jesus) doing their own voices in the dubbing. The story is structured with a wrap-around sequence where Pilate is on trial in front of Caesar, and Pilate recounts the events of his life.

CAPTAIN BLOOD (1960)-In French with English subtitles, letterboxed print. Good swashbuckler set in France by the time King Louis XIII was just a teenager. It seems that nobody wants to see him sitting on the throne, including his lovely mother. But there is a loyal nobleman who will fight bravely to put things in order. Legendary French actor Jean Marais is a bit too old to play the hero but he tries hard and really does a good job. As the comic relief, comedian Bourvil plays the street artist who helps Marais in his mission. Fencing and action sequences don't look as great as in Errol Flynn's classics but the old castles are real and "Le Capitan" provides a good fun for its audience. By the way, English title "Captain Blood" makes no sense; this captain has no relation neither to 1935 Hollywood classic nor to Rafael Sabatini's novel (this one is based on Michel Zévaco's histories)

CONQUEROR OF ATLANTIS (1965)-Letterboxed print. Kirk Morris and Helene Chanel star. This movie is an undiscovered gem,a sword and sandal adventure that came late in the genre but stands out as one of the very best.Kirk Morris,a great and undervalued peplum star plays Heracles who is washed ashore in Egypt and becomes involved in an adventure with some desert nomads which leads him to a mysterious kingdom in the sand that turns out to be Atlantis. Here things take a surreal turn as Herc battles a mad sorcerer,ray-guns and an army of blue-clad robotic warriors in a crescendo of action.Much of this movie's running time is taken up with Herc slugging it out with these warriors in some entertaining fistfights until his nomad friends arrive and enter the fray using evil looking metal balls connected to chains.I really wish that I had seen this movie as a kid because it would certainly have added spice to my cinematic upbringing which was laced with movies of this type.A footnote:THE CONQUEROR OF ATLANTIS resembles "Atlantis",the closing episode of the third season of "Hercules:The Legendary Journeys" and may perhaps have been an influence.

HERCULES REVENGE (1960)-In Italian with eng subs, letterboxed and original version (AIP butchered in the US as GOLIATH AND THE DRAGON). The movie  is a delirious muscleman fantasy from start to finish. A bearded Mark Forest shows off the biggest pecs and widest lats of his generation, and melts everyone with his smile (except scar-faced Broderick Crawford as the cranky villain). The costumes are beautiful, the sets are extravagant, the exterior landscapes are a lush paradise, the monsters are huge puppets, and just when you think the story can't become more bizarre...it does. Cottafavi will try just about anything to dazzle and disorient the viewer. In one scene, as our hero approaches, looms above, and then passes over the camera, the point of view turns completely upside-down; the effect is so audacious I had to laugh out loud! This is fearless (and yes, perhaps sometimes mindless) film-making, and the result is truly dreamlike, if not downright mythic

The story gets kind of lost in it all, and it's hard to keep track of just why everyone is violently seeking the Athena statuette, but who cares! Tony Russel and his escaped gladiator pals have their hands more than full trying to outwit the conspirators and take many a beating before they finally triumph.

TOWER OF THE SCREAMING VIRGINS (1968)-Uncut and letterboxed. Forget that shitty Sinister Cinema print, this one is pristine! Cast (in credits order): Teri Tordai ... Königin Marguerite de Bourgogne, Jean Piat ... Buridan,  Uschi Glas ... Blanche du Bois. This film is a crackerjack, at times rivetingly atmospheric con job of a mishmash of a film that defies convention so much that it is pimped as something it really isn't. The title and opening 10 minutes or so promise a sort of Edgar Wallace-like horror thriller about young men lured to their doom in a forbidden tower somewhere in France. There are hooded assassins, some surprisingly gory deaths, a bit of female nudity, and then the film shifts gears to become a swashbuckler right out of Alexandre Dumas -- who gets a writing credit -- concerning "The Hero of the Flanders Campaign" who has come back from chasing maidens around the countryside to engage in derring-do, righting wrongs, making the ladies swoon & the other swordsmen salute his valor, and above all serve his King

LAST TREASURE OF THE AZTECS (1964)-LETTERBOXED PRINT. Director: Piero Pierotti. Cast: Alan Steel (Cergio Ciani), Mario Petri, Wolfgang Lukschy, Brigitte Heiberg. It’s known as both Lost Treasure of the Incas and Lost Treasure of the Aztecs in the US. But hey, everybody knows the Incas lived in Peru and the Aztecs in Mexico, so with cowboys and western towns thrown into the mix, Aztecs would be slightly more plausible, geographically speaking. Alan Fox is being taken to Silver City to be tried for the murder of old Nixon, Janet's father. On the way the coach is attacked by a group of bandits headed by the real murderer: Jerry Damon. During the fight, Alan and a young Indian manage to escape. Samson, an old friend of Alan's, is convinced Alan has been killed and swears to revenge his death. Damon makes another attempt on Alan's life before heading off to the Palladi mountains in search of the golden treasure of the Incas.

THE MAGNIFICENT ADVENTURER (1963)-LETTERBOXED PRINT. Director: Riccardo Freda, Cast: Brett Halsey, Françoise Fabian, Claudia Mori. This historical war drama follows the command of 16th-century artist Benvenuto Cellini as he and his troops defend Rome against the attack of Charles V and his armies. An above-average "Euro-Cult" epic which also passes for a serviceable biopic of celebrated Renaissance-era artist Benvenuto Cellini (played by American Brett Halsey in one of his better showcases). Like THE BARBARIANS (1953), this film depicts the sacking of Rome and, in fact, here we are shown how he is asked by the Pope himself (Bernard Blier) – countering a fraud charge into the bargain – to lead the resistance! Of course, he also comes off as an unrepentant ladies' man – with jilted suitors being even ready to die for him – and whose charm affects tavern wenches (represented by spirited Claudia Mori aka Mrs. Adriano Celentano) and noblewomen (like Francoise Fabian, rather staid but undeniably lovely) equally. The latter is the neglected (and, typically, much younger) wife of a dullard engulfed in researching his eminent heredity…which our hero purports to take an earnest interest in so as to get at the lady(!), though he eventually ends up with the more down-to-earth of the two mentioned females. The narrative actually begins in his native city of Florence – where Cellini wins a prize judged and distributed during an audience before the king (while taking his first-ever bath!) for a gold-laden model. However, rivals accuse him of cheating in this case as well and this leads first to a brawl and eventually the destruction-by-fire of the sculptor's studio (and with it a large statue of Perseus triumphing over the Medusa he had intended dedicating to the Italian royal)!

TAMANGO (1959)-IN FRENCH WITH ENG SUBS, LETTERBOXED PRINT. TAMANGO is what Spielberg might have fashioned out of AMISTAD if he’d ditched all the boring legal stuff and stuck to what had been happening on board the ship – Curt Jurgens plays the captain of the Esperanza, taking his cargo of captured slaves from Guinea to Cuba.  Accompanying him on board is a hottie named Aiche (Dorothy Dandridge, who found fame in the lead roles of CARMEN JONES and PORGY AND BESS, and is even sexier here speaking in French), who has become fluent in French over the many years she’s been, ahem, romantically involved with the Captain (their affair, which is both out of wedlock AND interracial, was the reason this film was banned in the US).  Aiche is playing along in hopes of getting a piece of paper that will grant her freedom; the latest shipment of slaves have their own ideas about freedom though, and they’re not going to wait until the ship makes landfall to try for it. Set entirely at sea, to really emphasize the point that these slaves (and we, the audience) have nowhere to run and nowhere to escape to, TAMANGO keeps notching up the repression and sultry heat until it’s clear that it can only end in violence.  Director John Berry was blacklisted as a result of all that HUAC hoo-hah and ended up making films in France and other parts of Europe.  This French-Italian production is one of them.  TAMANGO is still a lost film in the home video world, so this project is my effort to help put it “out there” for people to see, because, you know, it’s a cool little film that’s been undeservedly forgotten.

L'ODISSEA  (1969) PART 1&2-IN ITALIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBS. Odysseus' journey told in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. After fighting in the Trojan War, Odysseus spends years trying to return home to Itaka.  Starring Bekim Fehmiu, Irene Pappas and Fausto Tozzi. The use of special effects was restrained making a more poetic rather than literal telling of the story. Among the cast Irene Pappas as Penelope is the most recognizable to North Americans. Recommended to all followers of Odysseus' ever returning. In all honesty, this series is as much a classic (as television goes) as the original poem is to the world's literature. Far from being crassly exploitative, it is a beautiful and respectful rendering of one of the western culture's defining texts.

SANDOKAN PIRATE OF MALAYSIA (1964)-Letterboxed print. Beautiful print!! The Pirates of Malaysia (also known as The Pirates of the Seven Seas) is a 1964 swashbuckler directed by Umberto Lenzi. Shot on location in Singapore, The Pirates of Malaysia is the story of a Malaysian rebel, Sandokan, who, with his group of renegades, tries to thwart an evil British general from forcing the good Sultan Hassim to resign in favor of the Imperial crown. Pirates of Malaysia is based on an adventure novel written by Italian author Emilio Salgari, published in 1896.  I've never read the novel, so i'm not to sure how true the film is to the book.  But in reality, when you've got a classic adventure film like this, directed by the Mr Umberto Lenzi and starring the real hercules Steves Reeves .... Who Cares!!  This is one blast of a film!!  If adventure has a name, it's not Indiana Jones, it's Lenzi - Reeves And The Pirates Of Malaysia.

KERIM, SON OF THE SHEIK (1962)-Beautiful letterboxed print. Gordon Scott, Liana Orfei and Gordon Mitchell star. Ok, here we go again with another great sword and sandal escapade called Kerim, Son of the Sheik.  This one features strongman Gordon Scott starring as Kerim the son of an older sheik belonging to one of the desert tribes.  He's out to seek revenge for the death of his sister at the hands of the local bully boy Emir Omar.   At first he starts off by doing small hit and run ambushes on the Emirs soldiers to annoy the hell out of him, but it soon snowballs into a full blown revolution of the peoples.  This is a very entertaining sword and sandal film with plenty of action and lots of sand.  It's obvious that the producers had a decent budget when making this film, and it shows.  It looks and feels authentic all the time with a decent directing job by director Mario Costa.  An adventure film with a middle eastern setting.   A sort of arabian adventure without the silliness of flying carpets or magic lamps, a real oasis of fun and exotic locations.

Alone Against Rome (1962)-Letterboxed print. Director: Luciano Ricci, Cast: Lang Jeffries ... Brenno, Rossana Podestà ... Fabiola, Philippe Leroy ... Silla, Gabriele Tinti ... Goruk. A Roman Consul, on his way to fight a border war, stations a garrison of soldiers in a provincial town. The townspeople aren't happy with this situation but decide it's in their best interests to cooperate. However, the Tribune left in charge of the garrison proves to be cruel and demanding. He takes over a house for his own use and forces his attentions on Fabiola, the owner's daughter. She reluctantly submits in order to protect the life of her lover, Brenno, who's already been publicly whipped and who's been hauled off to the local arena to provide sport for Roman gladiators. Soon, Brenno and Fabiola's brother are organizing a resistance which will put an end to the Tribune's reign of tyranny.

Isabella Duchess of the devil (1969)-Rare letterboxed print!  An Alsacian Baron massacres the family of a French Duke, and takes his lands, and his title. Isabella, the Duke's baby child, escapes the massacre, is raised by gypsies, and comes back twenty years later to exact revenge. This is an adaptation of a "fumetti", which were basically adult, (usually erotic) comic books popular in Europe in the 1960's and 70's. Brigitte Skay stars (and is nude and tortured a lot!) in this outstanding adaptation of the Italian adult comic. Directed by Bruno Corbucci. This is an excellent translation to the big screen of the very first Italian erotic comic book, dated 1966, by Sandro Angiolini, narrating the adventures of the young and beautiful Isabella and her path of vengeance against the evil Baron who killed her parents a few years before. The movie is a very good mix of the elements that made the success for this kind of adult comics books, part eroticism - often with sadistic overtones - part fighting, part torture, part laughs. The movie is a good rendition of the comic books feeling, with several nude and erotic scenes.

THE FURY OF HERCULES (1962)-Letterboxed print. FURY OF HERCULES is a damn good Hercules film -- in fact, it's a very solid and satisfying period action film by any standards, and you have to see at least 8 - 10 Hercules movies to know the difference. The plot revolves around Hercules (Brad Harris) visiting the daughter of an old friend and forced to choose between sides in a guerrilla rebellion. Most Hercules films -- God bless 'em! -- rely on standard plot devices and stock characters to move things forward. That's true here -- but to a point. Director Gianfranco Paolini actually pays attention to detail and with the film now in all its widescreen beauty, makes this one of the best!

ROME AGAINST ROME (1964)-Letterboxed print. Director: Giuseppe Vari, Starring: John Drew Barrymore, Susy Andersen, Ettore Manni, Ida Galli, Mino Doro & Ivano Staccioli. The story (English dub) goes thus: In a deliberately non-defined pseudo-historical setting in the Roman Empire, the Sarmatians attack and defeat a Roman legion, stealing the gold they had with them. Since Rome doesn't hear of the legate in the region, it sends a consul (Ettore Manni, the hero) to inquire. He soon finds out that the Sarmatians are manipulated by an evil magician (his name Adherbad is similar to a North-African one, Adherbal...) and priest of the 'daughter of Osiris', a three-eyed goddess which seems to demand human sacrifice. The Roman legate happens to be a traitor, and so is his wife Tullia (Susy Anderson). The consul catches her interest, but he falls in love with her slave (Ida Galli), who happens to be a priestess of the goddess...Apart from some competent and well-paced story-telling which involves some handsome spooky stuff such as a deadly (voodoo) doll, walking virgins on charcoals and a group of disgusting leprous henchmen at the bad guy's disposal (including an old hag) - they nearly rape Galli's character at one point -, we also get a dark and energetic score by Roberto Nicolosi and some fine make-up and lighting. There are only a handful of sets at the director's disposal, and only a couple of outside shots (much of the movie plays in a cave, and there is no Russian or Ukrainian scenery, to be sure), but Vari and his cinematographers use them with a great sense for variety.

WARRIOR AND THE SLAVE GIRL (1958)-Letterboxed print. Directed by Vittorio Cottafavi, Cast: Ettore Manni ... Marco Numidio, Gianna Maria Canale ... Amira, Mara Cruz ... Zahar, Georges Marchal ... Asclepio. Cottafavi directs a fine early genre specimen here. The movie starts out by having us believe that the Romans have grown tired and bored of their empire. No wonder it is crumbling. So this Marcus goes on quasi-vacation to Armenia, where the girls are supposed to be pretty a.s.o., and runs into the people's revolt. Princess Amira (played by lush beauty Gianna Maria Canale - what a lady!) immediately gain his attention. Little does he know she wants to get rid of 5-year-old Osro to ascend the throne herself. Meanwhile, the captives from the revolt are mistreated and paired off in the arena, to the amusement of the decadent Romans and Scythians (Amira's bodyguard). But there is also the titular slave girl, who hates all Romans but conveniently knows a lot about poisoning and might just save little Osro in time. Great heroic music by Nicolosi keeps up the tempo, as do battle scenes full of verve. Amira whips the hero's love interest and ends up being eaten by one of her own pet tigers. Did I mention the midget buffoon? Recommended to genre buffs.

CONQUEROR OF CORINTH (1962)-Letterboxed print. John Drew Barrymore and Jacques Sernas stars. A movie that appreciates the importance of glamorizing middle-aged guys' muscles as well as having tied up blonde chicks menaced by snakes, Conqueror of Corinth rewrites history in a way that allows you to enjoy the destruction of a society and its people.  Sure, in real life Rome outnumbered the Corinthians and there was no mention of a spurned lover being chucked into a hole full of serpents by a general taking a lunch break from fighting the Roman Empire in his own front yard, but there's a reason why history is written by the winners. And this movie with its whip-wielding blondes, snakes, and muscles is precisely that reason.

MARCO THE MAGNIFICENT (1965)-Letterboxed print. Cast:  Horst Buchholz, Anthony Quinn, Michael Sarrazin, Omar Sharif, Orson Welles, Robert Hossein, Akim Tamiroff. The first journey of Venetian explorer Marco Polo to the east. The storyline is fairly close to the real story of Marco's adventure, which began from Venice in 1271 and passed across land from Egypt through the Middle East and over the Himalayas to get to the empire of Kublai Khan. The film is fast moving and full of action sequences and picture postcard scenery where Marco gets repeatedly separated from his father and uncle, running the gauntlet of a good clutch of big stars in roles for which, rather unfortunately in some cases, they aren't particularly remembered. First of all, there's a brief appearance by Orson Welles as Marco's Jewish tutor Ackerman. Then, Omar Sharif crops up as Ala Hou, the desert sheikh who rescues Marco from captivity at the hands of Akim Tamiroff as the golden masked Old Man of the Mountain.

PERSEUS THE INVINCIBLE (1963)-In Italian with english subs, letterboxed print. Directed by Alberto de Martino and starring Richard Harrison, Anna Ranalli, Arturo Dominici, and Elisa Cegani. A warrior does battle against the evil Medusa, her army of stone warriors and a monstrous dragon. The most remarkable thing about MEDUSA AGAINST THE SON OF HERCULES is the Medusa itself. The Medusa in this film is a tentacled monster instead of a woman with vipers for hair. When I saw it for the first time my jaw was on the floor. It's by far the coolest thing I've ever seen in a movie. A truly one of a kind creation. The Medusa, totally in black, looks like an evil tree and moves around with spidery roots and has a uber thick nest of tentacles for hair, and it freezes men into statues of stone with its single huge glowing white eye. We see it walk around in a misty landscape which is strewn with marbled soldiers.

REVENGE OF THE GLADIATOR (1964)- Surprisingly grim, Revenge of the Gladiators starts off like any number of rather silly sword and sandal flicks with its gladiator heroes, deranged emperor, silly-looking barbarians, convoluted schemes to betray whomever happened to have his back turned at a given moment, and Mickey Hargitay, but then gets progressively darker until our heroes are reduced to joining a group of religious refugees fleeing the disintegrating Roman Empire. Truly a sobering experience, though Hargitay couldn't resist tapping into that natural goofiness that was so much in evidence in Bloody Pit of Horror by telling the barbarians while they were torturing him that their women smelled like sheep!

THE MASKED AVENGER (1964)-beautiful widescreen print (chunk that shitty something weird version!). Director: Pino Mercanti, Cast: Guy Madison, Lisa Gastoni. Massimo returns to Renaissance Venice after years of fighting the Turks to learn that Elena, his former sweetheart, is now married to the city's tyrannical Doge. He avoids resuming this romance, despite Elena's apparent interest, because he is now falling in love with the beautiful, blonde Katarina. He also avoids becoming involved in a plot to overthrow the Doge, but after a friend is tortured and killed by the Doge's men, Massimo feels compelled to join the spreading revolt. The plot moves at an efficient pace and is livened by such things as an archery contest, a falcon hunt, several swordfights, a collapsing bridge, and a dungeon-interrogation scene in which a bare-chested man is whipped, burned with a hot iron, and finally garroted.

HERCULES THE AVENGER (1965)-Beautiful widescreen print. Hercules' son gets severely wounded during a lion hunt that goes awry. Hercules (a solid and engaging performance by the beefy Reg Park) has to venture into an eerie and dangerous alternate dimension ruled by the evil and vengeful Gia the Earth Goddess (a deliciously wicked portrayal by Gia Sandri) and battle various monsters in order to save his son's soul. Meanwhile, Gia's equally nasty son Antaius (a perfectly hateful turn by Giovanni Cianfriglia) poses as Hercules and takes over an entire city as a cruel and ruthless tyrant. Director Maurizo Lucidi relates the engrossing story at a steady pace and maintains a serious tone throughout. This film begins a little slow, but really starts cooking once Hercules enters the misty and perilous subterranean spirit world: Rousing highlights include Hercules grappling with a humanoid lizard beast, Hercules climbing a giant gnarled tree, and Hercules being attacked by a bunch of creepy rotting zombies. Better still, the bizarre spirit world just reeks of spooky atmosphere (gotta love that persistent thick swirling fog!). The strenuous rough'n'tumble mano-a-mano major physical confrontation between Hercules and Antaius likewise totally rocks.

SPARTACUS AND THE 10 GLADIATORS (1964)-Letterboxed print. Unlike THE TEN GLADIATORS, the melodrama in SPARTACUS AND THE TEN GLADIATORS is kept to a minimum. The same with the comedy bits, which was really annoying in the first film (no midget here). The music is pretty good. The color scheme is actually tasteful (for a Peplum). And the acting, though nothing remotely memorable, is much better than its predecessor. The gang really click here and, again, because of the focused direction, the ten gladiators stand out better here. Dan Vadis is fun and seems to enjoy himself. The only real weakness, like the first film, is the underdeveloped explanation for the beefy bunch. Why are they together? What are their names? The script is seriously underwritten in this respect. The same could be said for the villains. Though suitably evil in a campy way, the pudgy Roman ruler and his henchman are hardly worthy adversaries to ten powerful gladiators. This series needed worthy bad guys to probably make it more memorable. And the battle sequence at the climax is probably footage from another film, which is unfortunate and lowers the merit of the whole film as a whole. But even with these obvious weaknesses, SPARTACUS AND THE TEN GLADIATORS has several stand-out scenes in it, including the beginning in the arena, the fighting between Vadis' character and Spartacus. The many battles sequences, which are sharply edited. The funny moments when the ten gladiators start eliminating the Roman soldiers. But the most memorable moment in the whole film is when Vadis, along with other slaves, hangs from a tree by a rope wrapped around a single arm (ouch). Then the Roman soldiers start killing the men hanging there with bows and arrows. Visually, this whole scene is a knock-out. The conclusion, with chariot and horses, is also visually striking. These moments tell me that director Nick Nostro had some talent for action. His style reminds me a bit of Sergio Leone.

VULCAN SON OF JUPITER (1962)-LETTERBOXED PRINT. Director: Emimmo Salvi, Cast: Bella Cortez, Iloosh Khoshabe, Roger Browne, Gordon Mitchell, Furio Meniconi. Tired of the sexual escapades on earth by his daughter Venus, Jupiter, the god of Lightning, decides he shall marry her soon to one of the candidates: Maciste, a mortal working in Vulcano's cave, and Mars, the god of War. But Mars abducts Venus, allied with Pluto and Eris, and works out a plan involving a bamboo tower high enough for the soldiers of the Thracian King to attack Jupiter in the high Olympus. The gods' contend will be resolved in human fashion on Earth, where even gods are mortal. This one hell of a twisted, crazy, mental peplum film.

THE AVENGER (1962)-BEAUTIFUL LETTERBOXED PRINT. This not the shitty looking Retromedia print, but a stunning looking new transfer! The story continues right after the excellent "The Trojan Horse", when the fleeing people of Troy arrive in Italy and try to settle there. Problems arise when the King of a nearby Kingdom grants the people of Troy the right to live near the Tiber river. In-fighting within the Kingdom, lead by Turno, who sees the Trojans as a threat, creates a scheme to make the Trojans look evil. A war between the Trojans and the Kingdom erupts. Losing the battle, the Trojans, lead by Aeneas (played by the legendary Steve Reeves), become allies with the Etruscans, the sworn enemies of the Kingdom. The never ending battle causes a lot of deaths and casualties on both sides. Desperate to end the war, both sides agree to settle the war with a duel between Aeneas and Turno. Stars Steve Reeves, Carla Marlier and Gianni Garko.

THE CORSAIRS (1971)-LETTERBOXED PRINT. Directed by Ferdinando Baldi and starring Dean Reed, Anabella Incontrera and Alberto De Mendoza. The American singer and actor Dean Reed stars in this adventure flick surrounded by charming Italian and Spanish actors."Los Corsarios" is certainly not a masterpiece but it offers some funny moments and characters though. The action scenes are decent and there are a lots of comic scenes which keep the spectator's interest till the end. The story is undoubtedly neither clever nor convoluted: Isabella, the beautiful daughter of the viceroy of a Caribbean island is in danger after the death of her father. Her evil cousin wants the throne for himself and is determined to get rid of her. Luckily, a bunch of pirates, led by the handsome adventurer Alan Drake shipwreck at the island and help the young princess. Although "Los Corsarios" has some flaws in the plot, it is a good way to spend 90 minutes if you like adventure comedies .In spite of the shallow characters, the actors are especially nice. Fans of Dean Reed will be glad to see him in his Italian period while he was starring in spaghetti-westerns and adventure films. The other male and female parts are also convincingly performed.

ARCHER OF FIRE (1971)-Letterboxed print. Giuliano Gemma (who died recently in a car crash) portrays Robin Hood obviously inspired by the swashbuckling tradition of Douglas Fairbanks, young Burt Lancaster and Errol Flynn, with a never disappearing broad grin against all odds. Mark Damon, a "Euro-Cult" lead in his own right, surprisingly accepted a secondary role in this case as Allen-a-Dale. Silvia Dionisio, then, is Maid Marian – who, having been promised to the Duke Of Nottingham when still a child and oblivious of Robin Hood's true identity, is naturally initially averse to the attentions of the ostensibly commoner outlaw (this lends the whole an unexpected, yet timely, class struggle angle)…and, by the way, she also proves to be Robin's chief rival in the archery contest!

HANNIBAL (1959)-In Italian with english subs, letterboxed print. After making his historic crossing of the Alps with elephants transporting supplies and troops, Hannibal marches on Rome in a war of revenge. During his advance, he captures Sylvia, the niece of Roman Senator Fabius Maximus but, instead of holding her prisoner, he shows her his powerful army and herds of elephants, then sets her free. He is sure she will report what she has seen to his Roman enemies. Hannibal defeats the Romans at the battle of Trebbia and sends a message to Sylvia that he is marching on Rome. This exciting Peplum in average budget blends historic events ,drama and spectacular battles . This is an epic and fiction film released by the producer Ottavio Poggi and professionally directed by Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia and Edgar G. Ulmer . Hannibal history is imaginatively brought to the life on colorful images with important production values by means of thousands extras and spectacular shots filmed in SuperCinemascope . This cardboard costumer saga contains word cross, drama and a love story between the known general badly performed by Victor Mature who falls in love with a Roman virgin played by Rita Gam, all of them abound in this moving adaptation on audacious Hannibal's existence, one of the most glorious military in the History. The Carthaginians were given the habitual all-purpose Mideastern costuming.

ERIK THE VIKING (1965)-LETTERBOXED PRINT. Directed by Mario Caiano and starring Gordon Mitchell, Giuliano Gemma and Eleonora Bianchi. The film is a Norse epic with the fact that the plot is somewhat unusual: in fact, here, the Vikings uncharacteristically take to the seas in search of new land (though the prologue insists it is an authentic account) and which, invariably, leads them to the Americas – centuries before Christopher Columbus ever set foot on it! We get the usual formula i.e. comic relief (via the antics of a learned Greek) and a lecherous wimp of a villain (ostensibly ruling the country in unison with the titular hero, played by Giuliano Gemma). The former sends a couple of assassins (a hammy Gordon Mitchell, actually top-billed, and Eduardo Fajardo, who is actually not that bad here) along for the ride to ensure that Erik does not come back…since he obviously has designs on his share of the wealth as well as his beloved back home. Also worth mentioning, for what it is worth, is the surprising viciousness of some of the action set-pieces – with the director providing a handful of bloodied faces in gratuitous close-up!

THE INVINCIBLE MASKED RIDER (1963)-IN GERMAN WITH ENGLISH SUBS, LETTERBOXED PRINT. Directed by Umberto Lenzi and starring Pierre Brice, Daniele Vargas and Helene Chanel. This is an Italian-French period costume piece retelling the Zorro legend, convincingly set in 1600s Spain. Pierre Brice (Winnetou) stars as Don Diego, who makes daring masked raids on his tyrannical stepfather's troops and incites the locals to stage an uprising. Brice was also in Zorro contra Maciste (released in America as Samson and the Slave Queen) for director Umberto Lenzi around the same time. Lenzi directed films of every genre for decades, but is best known for the gory horror films.

SLAVE OF CARTHAGE (1956)-IN ITALIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBS, LETTERBOXED PRINT. Directed by Guido Brignone and starring Gianna Maria Canale. Of all the Italian epics, this rarely-seen example would appear to be the most forgotten and the least acclaimed. On the face of it the film's credentials are highly impressive: the story is a broad re-make of Fabiola whereby a rich Roman lady is led to believe the Christians were responsible for the murder of her father. Italy's top costume villainess Gianna Maria Canale displays her customary icy exterior whilst harboring a secret inner passion for Spanish hunk Jorge Mistral (although neither probably knows what the other is talking about). Albertini's cinematography is visually stunning in rich colour.

HERCULES VS THE HYDRA (1960)-IN ITALIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBS, BEAUTIFUL LETTERBOXED PRINT. Jayne Mansfield, Mickey Hargitay and Massimo Serrato star. Mr. Universe 1955, Mickey Hargitay stars as Hercules in this peplum epic, which also prominently displays Hargitay's later wife in real life -- Jayne Mansfield in a double-role as Hercules' true love, Queen Deianira, and "wicked witch" Hippolyta. Amongst the many diversions are a wrestling match between Hercules and a full grown bull! A forest of wooden men -- the failed lovers of Hippolyta. There is an army of birdheaded amazons and a cave-dwelling monster, and then of course the "three" headed hydra, which Hercules battles at the gates to the underworld. All that aside, there is of course Mansfield's great natural charm(s) and multiple hair colors -- not including platinum blonde (amazingly). In other words, not a dull moment, and surely a highlight of the peplum cycle.

THE SECRET MARK OF D'ARTAGNAN (1962)-BEAUTIFUL WIDESCREEN PRINT. Director: Siro Marcellini and starring George Nader, Magali Noël, Georges Marchal. D'Artagnan and Porthos, working with Cardinal Richelieu, thwart a plan to overthrow Louis XIII. The Secret Mark of D'Artagnan borrows a handful of the characters and little else from the works of Dumas. Like many Italian films of the early 1960s, this swashbuckler stars an American actor, George Nader, in hopes of broadening its market. Nader plays D'Artagnan along more mature lines than most actors; he's even something of a ladies' man, a fact which very nearly gets him killed on several occasions. Confounding D'Artagnan's efforts to work on behalf of Louis XIII is Magali Noel as a buxom Milady De Winter.

100 HORSEMEN (1964)-IN ITALIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBS, LETTERBOXED PRINT. Don Fernando, the son of El Cid, rallies peasants and townspeople to overthrow Moorish occupiers in medieval Spain. Rare Peplum directed by Vittorio Cottafavi and starring Mark Damon, Antonella Lualdi, Gastone Moschin and Wolfgang Preiss. A specialist of the sword and sandal genre -"La Rivolta Dei Gladatiori" "Messalina Venere Imperatrice" "Le Legioni Di Cleopatra" :some say the latter is better than Mankiewicz's ;they must be blind- Vittorio Cottafavi ,who was a very educated man, never really made a movie which really showed it. , Cottafavi's film can stand on its own two feet thanks to the dazzlingly fluid direction which, despite the relatively low budget, gives the film a visually arresting look, particularly when pitting the red-cloaked rebels against the blue-clad Moors with the enslaved white-robed monks in the middle. Furthermore, composer Antonio Perez Olea provides a low-key but equally effective music score which goes against the grain of the grandiose ones typical of the genre. After a very funny first half, Cottafavi reserves his most outstanding trick for the climactic battle as he gradually drains all the color from the image and shooting most of it in black-and-white (anticipating Quentin Tarantino's KILL BILL VOL. 1 by 40 years!) thus rendering his depiction of the bleakness and tragedy of war all the more powerful.

FURY OF ACHILLES (1962)-LETTERBOXED PRINT. In the tenth year of the Trojan War, tensions between Achilles and Agamemnon divide the Greek camp while giving hope to the Trojans. Directed by Marino Girolami and starring Gordon Mitchell, Jacques Bergerac, Cristina Gaioni. Unlike any other Trojan War film I've seen, this one, like Homer, includes the gods and their divine intervention in human affairs. Achilles' near-invincibility is a supernatural fact, as demonstrated in a scene when he's stabbed and the blade is destroyed as if blasted by lightning. Yet the film doesn't feel like a fantasy, as do similar films about Jason, Hercules, or Ulysses; it's a psychological drama in which the psyche of the main character is driven by his understanding of his divine destiny. An oracle has revealed that Troy cannot fall until its champion, Hector, dies; Hector cannot die until Achilles slays him; and once that happens, Achilles must die. This is the burden of greatness — and doom — that lies upon Achilles. Even dubbed, Gordon Mitchell gives a powerful and convincing portrayal of the warrior who is both hero and monster. His physical presence is perfect: his physique is statuesque but his features are so rugged as to be ugly (think of Charles Bronson or Jack Palance); he is sexually alluring, physically intimidating, and frightening to look at.

CONQUEROR OF MARACAIBO (1961)-LETTERBOXED PRINT.  Director: Eugenio Martín and Stars: Hans von Borsody, Luisella Boni, Helga Liné. This is a amusing movie but a low budget. In the sets utilized by Anthony Mann for THE CID, Eugenio Martin converted Peñiscola to Maracaibo. Helga Line, is a pretty women pirate but masked always and the Spanish actor Carlos Casaravilla, Barta Barrie, José Maria Cafarell and Luis Sánchez are the other  pirate characters. This movie is very entertaining, sympathetic and amusing. Martin may not have the  budget  from THE CID, but the action is very professional. The good pirate, here is a heroe and has a rousing battle with the evil pirates. Idealism rules here, not pretension.

EXECUTIONER OF VENICE (1963)-LETTERBOXED PRINT. Lex Barker, Guy Madison Alessanra Panaro, Mario Petri. It's Lex against Guy in this great epic set in the early 17th century. This is an entertaining swashbuckling, full of action, thrills ,romance , double-crosses and of course , a lot of fence . It is something quite diverse from the ordinary adventure scenery : hardly open sea , different boats , the gondolieri , the spectacular designs palaces and bridges . It's Lex Barker against Guy Madison and a strange pirate posing as an executioner well played by Mario Petri . In this set in the end of middle ages , next to the Italian Rennaisance period. Lavish production by Octavio Poggi with excellent gowns , evocative sets , right cinematography and powerful score . Lots of court intrigue , treason, twists and turns . THE VINDICATOR (1959)-IN GERMAN WITH ENGLISH SUBS, LETTERBOXED PRINT. Director: William Dieterle, Stars: Rosanna Schiaffino, Paul Dahlke, John Forsythe. With "Il Vendicatore" William (Wihelm)Dieterle ,before Robert Siodmak and Fritz Lang, came back to his native Germany. Whereas Siodmak 's back-to-homeland films were depicting his country, both Lang and Dieterle chose exoticism: "der Indische Grabmal" with took place in India for the former, Russia for the latter. A Russian story which sounds more European cum Hollywood than Slavian. An international cast features John Forsythe, Rossanna Schiaffino and Dieterle himself as the villain. The story looks like a Russian Robin Hood ;the story of a young officer whose father was despoiled of his valuable properties by a wealthy neighbor ;so he becomes the leader of the rebellion of the moujiks spending their life slaving away( shortly before his death, his father told his wicked "friend" : you feed your dogs with boiled beef and fresh eggs and your peasants are starving!!!),and he steals from the rich to give to the poor.

FALL OF ROME PT 1 (1968)-IN GERMAN WITH ENGLISH SUBS, LETTERBOXED PRINT. Director: Robert Siodmak. : Laurence Harvey, Orson Welles, Sylva Koscina, Honor Blackman (nice topless scene), Lang Jeffries. Around 500 A.D., after Rome has fallen, a Roman politician, Cethegus, played by Laurence Harvey, tries to return Rome to greatness. He plays the Goth leaders, who really ruled Italy at this time, against each other. The surviving leader attacks Rome at which point Cethegus gets military help from the Emperor Justinian (Orson Wells), while he keeps his army in reserve to take on whoever is left. Events don't quite go as he planned. This is a complex, well plotted film. It is no Ben Hur, but the characters are engaging, the political intrigue is very well developed, the acting quite good (Laurence Harvey's final scene is great) and the battle scenes truly epic. In an unusual bit a casting, Michael Dunn plays Justinian's general Narses and, in great performance, steals almost every scene he is in. This is a quite good unjustly neglected epic well worth tracking down and seeing.

The same story of Freda's debut film "Don Caesar di Bazan", this version is a jewel of swashbuckling Italian style with all the best qualities of the genre: sumptuous sets, refined use of color, and hints of Gothic horror: a man is submerged into a pit full of piranhas, and a swordfight takes place underneath and through a set of giant guillotines, which drop their blades onto the fighters!

LE BACCANTI (1961)-BEAUTIFUL WIDESCREEN PRINT, ENGLISH DUBBED. Director: Giorgio Ferroni, Stars: Taina Elg, Pierre Brice, Alessandra Panaro. Giorgio Ferroni has fully tapped his cinematic talents, creating a movie which is visually every bit as stunning as Francisci's "Hercules." The tale itself is based on an ancient Greek play, but that is incidental. This one contains some very nicely decorated sets, an excellent score, budget costumes, and good acting. Pierre Brice is at his best as Dionysus, who comes to Thebes only to be short-shrifted by King Penteus (Alberto Lupo), who forbids his worship in that city. I've seen several other of Ferroni's films, but this one stands in my mind as one of the best. Nerio Bernardi is also in place as the high priest, while Alessandra Panaro and Taina Elg head the female cast. All in all, this is a wonderful film, and one that should be seen by every fan of the genre.

FIRE OVER ROME (1965)-BEAUTIFUL WIDE SCREEN PRINT. Marcus Valerius, a young consul, is assigned the mission to assist Menecrate, the leader of the Pretorian Guard, in the arrest and execution of as many Christians as possible. While raiding the Catacombs he has the surprise to find among the Christians the woman he loves, Giulia, who has been converted secretly to the banned religion. He helps her to escape and trouble soon follows. Stripped of his rank and arrested for defending the rebels he is condemned to fight as a gladiator... Perhaps because of the success of his earlier film REVOLT OF THE SLAVES, Lang Jeffries was cast again as a man fighting for the persecuted Christians against the Roman Empire in this film made two years later. While in the first film Jeffries was a slave, here he is a Roman military leader who loses his commission and is taken into custody for his defense of Christians who are tortured and persecuted by Nero and his henchmen. Jeffries is not featured particularly well in this film and he is not allowed to dub his own (very distinctive!) voice. His hairstyle also is not particularly flattering. Still, he plays the role convincingly and looks concerned, although he disappears for stretches of time throughout the film. Nero is once again depicted as an over-the-top yet effeminate dictator-clown. While he does not fiddle as Rome burns, he does pluck his lyre while Rome burns! I don't have a problem with the cheesy animation/model depiction of the fires--after all, this is a low budget film.

As this featured a major star, it had a bigger budget than many cheap Italian costume epics with lesser-known Americans (it's comparable to, say , a Steve Reeves movie), so it's colorful and visually exciting. Director Antonio Margheriti (aka Anthony Dawson) turned out all kinds of genre films in the 60s and after--westerns, peplums, horror, spy, erotic, giallo, science fiction, etc--and generally produced an exciting, fast-moving product.

Financed with Catholic funds, and loosely based on the 1854 novel by Cardinal Wiseman, it was disliked by the Catholics for being too daring in erotic scenes (!).Alessandro Blasetti was a versatile, creative and restless director whose first dozen films spanned social realism (Sole), rural populist propaganda (Sole, Terra Madre), comedy (Nerone), melodrama (Resurrectio), drama (Palio), history (1860) and political history (Vecchia Guardia), with unusual sensitivity to light, composition, actors and working class issues. In Fabiola he took on the grand Italian tradition of historical costume epic, but with several interesting twists. The film was a joint Italian-French production and the three leads are French actors. Costume epics favored heroics and spectacle, but Fabiola's values are anti-heroic and humanist, played off against the film's strikingly explicit physical brutality and sadistic cruelty.

MYSTERIOUS HORSEMAN (1948)-IN ITALIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBS. Director: Riccardo Freda, Stars: Cast: Vittorio Gassman, María Mercader, Yvonne Sanson, Gianna Maria Canale. If you can imagine a James Bond movie dolled up in sumptuous 18th-century garb - with moody black-and-white camerawork, Baroque direction and a witty script - you may get some idea of what a rich and rare treat awaits anyone who can track down this long-neglected Riccardo Freda gem. In the years after World War II - while most of the Italian film industry was drowning in dreary, no-budget Neo-Realist misery - Freda continued to whip up the sexy and stylish souffles that were his stock-in-trade for the best part of four decades. So why do critics write endless books about tedious Philistines like Rossellini and de Sica, but ignore the fact that Freda even existed? It just shows you what a deeply subjective business 'film history' can be. In this particular epic, that dashing Venetian nobleman Giacomo Casanova (played with great brio by Vittorio Gassman) swings into action to track down an incriminating letter, which threatens to ruin the Doge's wife and sink the whole of the Serene Republic along with it. His quest takes him all the way across Europe, to the deliciously decadent court of Catherine the Great of Russia (Yvonne Sanson). On the way, he tangles with a sinister underground brotherhood, an alluring transvestite lady spy (Gianna Maria Canale) and the notorious nymphomaniac Empress herself. Throw in a few sword-fights, a lavish Imperial ball or two, a spectacular bear-hunt in the snow, a breakneck chase for the border on sleighs. There's even a grisly torture scene, to remind us that Freda finally left the swashbuckling genre to become (with films like I Vampiri and The Horrible Doctor Hichcock) the first great pioneer of Italian horror.
